Doodle Daze – A blog about a labradoodle

On getting older…

Barney recently turned seven.  Yikes!  He’s getting old.  Then again, he doesn’t seem to recognise it all the time.  He still wants to play a LOT.  Does his doodle dashes.  So, still youngish.  But he also enjoys his solitude and rest much more.  His play sessions are shorter.  And he can’t quite keep up with those young pups who are running around.

What we love about him right now is that he’s getting more and more cuddly.  He will curl up with us and will let me hold him on my lap.  This is a big change in the last year.  He’s so much more affectionate than I would have imagined.  Some of this might be the fact that I’ve been at home a lot more due to not working full time.  Some of it is that we’re asserting our dominance in a positive way (he’s learned to walk at our side and that he can’t come upstairs with us unless we truly want him…that sort of thing).

I hope we have Barney for many more years to come.  I look back at my first posts about him, like this one, where I wasn’t too happy about owning this doodle, and I cringe a bit.  I didn’t know what an amazing friend I would end up with!

A rising star

So, two weekends ago, we went with Barney to the Norfolk coast.  We didn’t go the entire weekend, but left on Saturday after my hockey match.  It seems kinda crazy to travel 2-1/2 hours for one night, but there was a good purpose.  Barney, along with 14 other dogs, and his dog trainer/walker, Dima, were going to filmed for a future tv programme on ITV (I’ll post when it’s airing).

On the Sunday, all the dogs arrived at Hunstanton beach to begin the process of filming.  Hunstanton is a really pretty beach with an amazing tidal system.  When we arrived, the tide was out and it was out a long way…by the time we left (many hours later) the tide had come in and the waves were strong.

The day was mixed in terms of weather (hello, England) – we had torrential rain, sun and everything in between.  Luckily, the dogs didn’t care – they were having so much fun running up and down the beach, being filmed in all their glory.  They got to play together in the waves (yes, this made me nervous in case one of the dogs got tired and dragged out too far) and ran around the beach with each other.  It was very, very cool.

Barney was exhausted by the end of the day, which is why he allowed us to take this final picture before Roy’s phone died (mine already did before we reached the beach):

The New Door

We recently purchased a new door.  It’s all fancy-schmancy…with a keypad/remote controlled door.  If you want, it talks to you to let you know if it’s locked or not.  Needless to say, Barney is a bit freaked out by the door.  We started off by having to turn off the voice, though it still makes some clicking/whooshing noises as it opens and closes (I feel all futuristic).  He still was a bit freaked.  But…he’s finally figured out the positive to the door:

Yup, he has his own peek-hole!  Now this means that he’s barking a lot more as he’ll back at anything that moves (the glass is somewhat obscurred but he can see a bit through it).  But he lurves it.  He just sits there and looks out onto the world.

Just busy being a dog

Hi.  I know.  It’s been a while.  Mummy has been busy lately and hasn’t wanted to type for me.  But I begged and begged her to do it.  I got powers ya know.  For reals.

I’ve been busy too.  I go on three walks a day.  Three.  And when I’m not sleeping, I go and sniff stuff, play with my mummy’s socks (nom, nom) and lick the daddy’s computer.  On weekends, I even get to sleep in and cuddle with the mummy and daddy.  I lurve it.

Last weekend, mummy and daddy invited some people to the house for a bbq.  I was a bit nervous at first, and I have to admit that I barked at ’em, but eventually they started giving me food and that made me a bit more relaxed, cause I knew they had to be good people.  And even better, they sat down on the lawn so I could look at them face to face…that always makes me feel better.  I even let a few of the hoomons pet me.  It was okay.  I slept really hard that night.  It’s very exhausting looking out for mummy and daddy.

I’m also quite proud right now.  There’s a HOOG picture of me hanging in our living room over my couch.  Mummy asked me to sit and pose one day for a portrait.  She said I looked so hansom.  I don’t know what that means but she was smiling so I think it’s a good thing.  Here’s a picture of me sitting on the couach under my picture…cool.  Do you think I’m hansum?
