The Old Man

Barney’s 12th birthday is in 6 days. And he has definitely reached the grumpy old man phase of his life.

Grumpy: he has begun barking whenever he feels that he needs more attention than we’re giving him. Closed a door to meet up with a client – barking for a lot longer than before. Going to bed and he wants attention (cause he can no longer go up the stairs to our bedroom) – barking. He’s in another room then you are – barking (and no, he doesn’t actively think that he could come join us unless we call him in).  He also does this cute growly thing to get your attention if he’s in the room and wants something (like a walk or just attention). Grumpy!

Old: he wants to lie on the hardwood floors because they are either warmer or cooler than his bed but he also struggles to get up from the floor because of his bad hind quarters. Guess who likes to lie on the floor in the middle of the night but then tries to move and can’t? Guess what he does at 4am when he’s frustrated with this? Yup, bark. He also is starting to need to pee early am. He’s been so good since we got him about being able to hold his pee for hours and hours. It’s not surprising that he’s hitting an age where he needs to go in the middle of the night (heck, I’m there too). So, 4:30am this morning – barking. Bah.

Despite the old grumpy stage, we’re still so happy to have him in our lives. He’s gotten a bit cuddlier and definitely loves his belly rubs. His tummy seems to be doing okay and we’re trying to manage his arthritis.  We see the vet today for a blood test and to talk about his hind quarters as he’s struggling a bit with one of his legs (he doesn’t seem to be able to hold his weight on it and hops at times so as to not use it).

He still does doodle dashes once in a grand while though I try to discourage it as his legs will often give out in the midst of a turn and he struggles afterwards with soreness. At 12, he’s a grumpy old man who wants to be a puppy.

Almost 12

Barney’s birthday is in less than a month. I can’t believe he’s going to be 12. Twelve is the age that dogs like him sometimes don’t get to. I’m part of a labradoodle rescue group and many an owner has lost their doodle before age 12.

Luckily for me, Barney still seems to be going strong. Yes, he’s still suffering from arthritis a bit. It’s hard seeing him try to lay down as you can see how stiff he is. But he rarely needs his medications as the supplements that he’s on are working well enough that he can walk around and even play without any problems.

Sometimes, you look at him or he looks at you and you can see that the puppy is still inside. The other day, I got one of those looks. It was pure happiness that he was going on a walk.  It still makes me smile.

Barney is still with us a bit over a year later. He’s definitely feeling more his age of 11-1/2.  He’s been suffering from arthritis but he’s doing okay.  We’re keeping him on lead walks instead of letting him run around and he’s taking some meds which also appear to be working for him (some of them are all natural stuff and he has meds from his vet when necessary).  He has also had a problem with his pancreas and so is now on a low fat diet – believe me, he loves it, as it’s a raw food diet with special mixes of meats, veg and bone.  He dances every time he gets a meal.

In his old age Barney has become a lot friendlier and is open to meeting new people much more quickly.  Yes, he still barks at first, but he gets over his fears quite quickly (especially if he’s given treats).  He’s our lovely gentle giant.

Happy ‘Gotcha’ Day!

Six years ago, we picked up Barney from  the Labradoodle Trust.  If you look back at some of our first entries, you’ll recognise that he was a bundle of anxiety.  He didn’t trust people, didn’t like to be touched and wasn’t great around other dogs.  He was tough work.  But with some work, some training and a lot of love, he’s become our wonderful gentle giant!

We recently moved, so the poor guy is still adjusting, but he’s doing well for an 8-1/2 year old.  Most people still think he’s a lot younger than he is as he’s fit, still can do doodle dashes and be crazy.  He has found a few spots to love, including his new bed in our new bedroom – as soon as I put it down, he went over to lie on it and hasn’t stopped since.  He also loves being on his new couch in front of the big bay window and the back bedroom bed so he can look in the park behind us.

We love you, Barney!  So happy you joined our family!

Barney in his kingdom

It’s a grey but comfortable day for March in London.  Barney decided to hang out in the back garden.  So I decided to take his picture.  As per usual, he gave me his ‘whatever’ look.  Love that dog!

Maybe if I don’t look at her she’ll go away

Really? Again, mummy?

OK. I love you, but you can leave me alone now.

On getting older…

Barney recently turned seven.  Yikes!  He’s getting old.  Then again, he doesn’t seem to recognise it all the time.  He still wants to play a LOT.  Does his doodle dashes.  So, still youngish.  But he also enjoys his solitude and rest much more.  His play sessions are shorter.  And he can’t quite keep up with those young pups who are running around.

What we love about him right now is that he’s getting more and more cuddly.  He will curl up with us and will let me hold him on my lap.  This is a big change in the last year.  He’s so much more affectionate than I would have imagined.  Some of this might be the fact that I’ve been at home a lot more due to not working full time.  Some of it is that we’re asserting our dominance in a positive way (he’s learned to walk at our side and that he can’t come upstairs with us unless we truly want him…that sort of thing).

I hope we have Barney for many more years to come.  I look back at my first posts about him, like this one, where I wasn’t too happy about owning this doodle, and I cringe a bit.  I didn’t know what an amazing friend I would end up with!
