The Old Man

Barney’s 12th birthday is in 6 days. And he has definitely reached the grumpy old man phase of his life.

Grumpy: he has begun barking whenever he feels that he needs more attention than we’re giving him. Closed a door to meet up with a client – barking for a lot longer than before. Going to bed and he wants attention (cause he can no longer go up the stairs to our bedroom) – barking. He’s in another room then you are – barking (and no, he doesn’t actively think that he could come join us unless we call him in).  He also does this cute growly thing to get your attention if he’s in the room and wants something (like a walk or just attention). Grumpy!

Old: he wants to lie on the hardwood floors because they are either warmer or cooler than his bed but he also struggles to get up from the floor because of his bad hind quarters. Guess who likes to lie on the floor in the middle of the night but then tries to move and can’t? Guess what he does at 4am when he’s frustrated with this? Yup, bark. He also is starting to need to pee early am. He’s been so good since we got him about being able to hold his pee for hours and hours. It’s not surprising that he’s hitting an age where he needs to go in the middle of the night (heck, I’m there too). So, 4:30am this morning – barking. Bah.

Despite the old grumpy stage, we’re still so happy to have him in our lives. He’s gotten a bit cuddlier and definitely loves his belly rubs. His tummy seems to be doing okay and we’re trying to manage his arthritis.  We see the vet today for a blood test and to talk about his hind quarters as he’s struggling a bit with one of his legs (he doesn’t seem to be able to hold his weight on it and hops at times so as to not use it).

He still does doodle dashes once in a grand while though I try to discourage it as his legs will often give out in the midst of a turn and he struggles afterwards with soreness. At 12, he’s a grumpy old man who wants to be a puppy.

Poor Barney was attacked by a dog he’s known for months and was walking with regularly. It was weird and random and unexpected. Luckily, Barney is not too badly off, but he does have four puncture wounds in his bum. He’s going to be wearing the cone of shame for a while, but he seemed okay with another dog when he was at the vet, so hopefully it won’t make him fearful.

Please look away if you don’t want to see Barney’s wound…

And he’s 11+

Barney is still with us a bit over a year later. He’s definitely feeling more his age of 11-1/2.  He’s been suffering from arthritis but he’s doing okay.  We’re keeping him on lead walks instead of letting him run around and he’s taking some meds which also appear to be working for him (some of them are all natural stuff and he has meds from his vet when necessary).  He has also had a problem with his pancreas and so is now on a low fat diet – believe me, he loves it, as it’s a raw food diet with special mixes of meats, veg and bone.  He dances every time he gets a meal.

In his old age Barney has become a lot friendlier and is open to meeting new people much more quickly.  Yes, he still barks at first, but he gets over his fears quite quickly (especially if he’s given treats).  He’s our lovely gentle giant.

I’s been good

When I gotta wee, I go and lik mummy on the hand, if she is sitting on the couch.  Daddy doesn’t always get it if i do it to him, but mummy does.  So, last night my tummy wasn’t feeling well (I had thowed up earlier in the day) and I went and licked mummy’s face.  She looked at the clock, said it was 3am and turned around.  I don’t know why she didn’t get it.  I really had to go.  So I left.  I try to hold it when I can’t go out and I’m really good at this. But finally I just couldn’t deal with it any longer.  So I barked and barked.  Something was going to come out whether I liked it or not.  Mummy came down, cursing a bit under her breath.  She told me she was a bit nervous as I was hovering around the back door.  Did it mean someone was trying to break in?  No, mummy, i just wanna go out.  She let me out and I went immediately to the back and poo’d. It was not a nice poo.  It was icky.  Yuck.  Mummy didn’t seem too happy about it either, though she did tell me I had been a good boy for letting her know I had the squirts.

I’m dealing with this still in the morning.  Sigh.  I went for a walkie with mum and when we got back I went to the back door again.  I couldn’t help it.  I had to go.  Icky again.  Mummy said that she’ll hang out with me for a while this morning just in case I have to go again before my dog walker comes.  She has to go into work for a few things, but she can miss the morning.  She lurves me lots.  I think I’ll go have a lie down now.  I don’t have much energy.  Bye.

Barney has healed!

We went to the vet and they took off all his stitches, so he’s now out of the plastic cone!  Woo hoo!  He is one happy dog.  He came home and doodle dashed all over the back garden.  It was cute.  He’s also now licking himself like mad…I think he has 3-1/2 weeks to make up for not licking.  So he does have a small chuck of his ear that he’s missing, but that doesn’t matter at all.  So here’s a quick shot I took of his ear while trying to make him stand still (very difficult right now):

It’s still icky looking, but believe me, it’s a lot better than before.  So now we have to trim his other ear so that the fur will look similar (he looks a bit lopsided at the moment).

I’m taking him to the park today to meet up with his walking pack…that way he can start again with Dima perhaps even tomorrow!

Well…Barney is getting better.  His ear is starting to heal.  He has a lovely crust including blood and new skin over the stitches.  Hoping that it holds and that the vet, who we’re seeing on Thursday, will say that the stitches can come out next week.  I’d really like to get him back with the dog walker before I have to go to work again…which is in less than two weeks!

My solution

So, while Barney’s ear isn’t bleeding like a stuck pig like before, any time he flicks it, it does begin to bleed a bit.  So in order to try to solve this problem and still allow his ear to ‘breathe’, I decided to use a bandana.  When I had long hair, my bandana kept my hair from flopping about even when running around and diving all over the place…hmmm…maybe this would work for Barney too!

So I put the bandana on and it covers the ear enough to keep it from flapping but still open enough so that the wound/stitches can ‘breathe’.  I’m quite pleased though right now he is sulking up a storm.  Here’s a picture of grandma Barney:
