Mum and dad have finally set me free from the cone from hell and I’m having lots of fun running around in the rain and muck with my doggy friends.  Mummy said that doing the couch to 5k programme with me is getting much easier, though she doesn’t like it when I stop to poop in the middle of the run.  Sorry mum, when ya gotta go ya gotta go. Simple as that.

I don’t think I’ve written about a small pet peeve of mine…nicknames.  Now, I know that mum and dad think that they are being cute with all the names they call me, but it’s getting a bit ridonculus.  How would they like it if I called them the following:

– Dumm dumm

– bumm bumm

– booboo pie

– dum shit

– googoo pie

– foofoo dog

– baabaa bear

– poopy bear

etc, etc

I realize that they are said with lots of love, but still…come on.  Call me Barney.  But boo boo?  Ick!  It’s embarassing!

Barney has healed!

We went to the vet and they took off all his stitches, so he’s now out of the plastic cone!  Woo hoo!  He is one happy dog.  He came home and doodle dashed all over the back garden.  It was cute.  He’s also now licking himself like mad…I think he has 3-1/2 weeks to make up for not licking.  So he does have a small chuck of his ear that he’s missing, but that doesn’t matter at all.  So here’s a quick shot I took of his ear while trying to make him stand still (very difficult right now):

It’s still icky looking, but believe me, it’s a lot better than before.  So now we have to trim his other ear so that the fur will look similar (he looks a bit lopsided at the moment).

I’m taking him to the park today to meet up with his walking pack…that way he can start again with Dima perhaps even tomorrow!

An attempt to take the dog on a walk/jog…

Today I was all psyched for my c25k run/walk.  It’s day 2 so not too arduous.  I had my clothes laid out, sneakers at the ready & a new armband for my iPhone.  I was going to not only rock this but look good trying.  Well, things didn’t go exactly to plan.

Disaster 1:  I had a pair of workout camis that I hadn’t worn in a while.  I had used them for walking in and never had a problem.  They seemed to stay over my hips just fine.  And did so during the warmup though there was a bit of slippage.  No worries.  Then I did my first run and felt them going down, down, down.  I knew that if I wasn’t wearing a longerish t-shirt, my crack and underwear would totally be showing.  It’s not a great feeling that people in your neighborhood are seeing you hoiking up your trackies while walking/jogging.

Disaster 2:  We went into the local park, which I think Barney hadn’t been in for weeks.  He loves this park.  He went a bit mad and pulled like crazy.  I had a hard time paying attention to what I was meant to do and him.  Then he pulled one way and the armband came undone.  Argh.  In the midst of one of the eight runs.  I fixed it, but didn’t realize I lost his poop bag (this will come into play later).  So I ran a bit after that during a walk and totally went out of the program for a bit.

Disaster 3:  on the way out of the park, a woman with a dog started heading in our direction.  And again, Barney went mental.  So this woman doesn’t go in a different direction or stop for a bit…no, she isn’t staring at my losing my shit while my dog goes mental.  She keeps walking in the same frickin’ direction.  Hello!  Big frickin’ open park…mental dog and owner…walk away from them…help owner.  For F’s sake!  I finally get him under control but it takes a lot of hard work to pull in a bouncing crazy labradoodle with a plastic cone on him.

Disaster 4:  in the midst of the last run, Barney puts the breaks on and poops.  I go for the baggie and it’s gone.  And he’s popped in someone’s driveway so I can’t just leave it and come back…and it happens in front of people pulling in across the street.  So I go into the people’s recycling and find newspaper to pick it up with.  Newspaper is not great for picking up the HUGE pile of shite that this dog has just done.  I luckily, in a few more minutes, find a plastic garbage bag.  And a trash bin soon thereafter.

So I didn’t have the run/walk I was hoping for.  I can laugh right now.  But gosh it was frustrating.  Very.

Well…Barney is getting better.  His ear is starting to heal.  He has a lovely crust including blood and new skin over the stitches.  Hoping that it holds and that the vet, who we’re seeing on Thursday, will say that the stitches can come out next week.  I’d really like to get him back with the dog walker before I have to go to work again…which is in less than two weeks!

My solution

So, while Barney’s ear isn’t bleeding like a stuck pig like before, any time he flicks it, it does begin to bleed a bit.  So in order to try to solve this problem and still allow his ear to ‘breathe’, I decided to use a bandana.  When I had long hair, my bandana kept my hair from flopping about even when running around and diving all over the place…hmmm…maybe this would work for Barney too!

So I put the bandana on and it covers the ear enough to keep it from flapping but still open enough so that the wound/stitches can ‘breathe’.  I’m quite pleased though right now he is sulking up a storm.  Here’s a picture of grandma Barney:

Square One

We’re definitely back to square one.  I took Barney out for his first walk after surgery number two and he was almost like the dog he used to be when we got him in terms of his anxiety.  If a person came anywhere near him, he went into a panic.  He pulled, spun, etc.  He’s back to barking at dogs who are near him, which of course, freaks out their owners.  I don’t know how much to attribute to him having the required cone on, which makes him feel vunerable, or if he’s going to have to go through all that training again.  It’s so frustrating for me as it’s happening at the worst time for me in some ways…I’m about to start work again & won’t have much time to dedicate to Barney.  Roy’s great about it, butI feel that I’d love to be involved in helping him recover his confidence.  And on top of all of this, people keep looking at Barney like he’s a freak and are acting more fearful of him than they did before.  Frustrating!  One year almost down the drain.

On the positive side, he is still good about heeling (kinda) as long as no one is around.  So hoping that we can get him to stop being fearful around people once more on walks so that he doesn’t do the twirling maniac routine any longer…and can stick by our side instead of trying to get into the road.  Reminder to self – tell Roy to be extra careful when walking Barney because of this return of his tendency to bolt into the street.

Back again…

I’m so sad.  Barney is back in surgery again.  The initial surgery didn’t “take”, and his flapping of his ears meant that the wound kept re-opening and bleeding.  So he will probably have to have part of the edge of his ear taken off so they can get better stitches in and then hope that the flapping of the ear won’t hurt it this time.  I’m so sad for him.  Unfortunately, all of this has set him back a bunch in terms of his anxiety issues…again he’s freaked out by every sound, barking at other dogs on lead, anxious around people and not too trusting of us (we keep taking him back to that place where he hurts).  It just make me want to cry.  My poor puppy dog.

Update:  He’s back home and pretty much passed out.  He can’t hold up his head for too long or his legs give out.  I expect he’ll be out of it for about 24 hours.  They ended up adding a bunch of stitches so it ought to hold up better…crossing fingers!
