A few new pics

Back from Cornwall (where I want to take Barney very badly for a swim in the ocean)…and took a few pics over the weekend of our lovely Barndor:

The first two are of Barney playing with his new favorite item, a Homer Simpson slipper, which apparently he found and Roy allowed him to take home.  The second are of the two love birds on the sofa…in their fav position.  Barney is becoming such a daddy’s boy!

I love writing about Barney.  It makes me happy to post news even if it’s not good news.  I get to look back and see how things change.  But recently I haven’t been able to post much and won’t in the next few weeks either…because of my job and hockey.  I hate it.  I love my job and I love hockey, but I feel like I never see either my dog or my husband (have to admit, I miss my husband more, but Barney is a close second).  Next week I’m heading out on a school trip.  My group of 19 is going to Cornwall to go scuba diving.  I wish I could drag my hubby and dog along with me as I think they’d love being in the country and Barney would love the water.  But it’s not to be…at least not this year.  A few weeks later, we’re going away to the States for five days and Barney will have to stay with his dog walker.  So more time with hubby but less with doggie.

So I apologize ahead of time for not posting much about how Barney is doing, or putting up pics.  I don’t have the time to take pics or write.  But once hockey is over with my school (mid-Nov…after 2-1/2 months of 4-5 days a week of trainings), I promise I’ll put a lot more on here.

A few changes

Barney has had some ups and downs lately.  More ups, to be honest, but the downs have been rough on him.  Last night, when Roy returned from work, he found Barney with swollen shut eyes and a dog who didn’t want to go outside…a very, very rare sight.  He gave the dog an antihistimine which seemed to help, but also got in touch with the vet who had him come over immediately.   She isn’t sure what is entirely wrong, but we have drops and pills for him to take.  We’re hoping it’s either allergies or just a case of conjunctivitis caused by grit or something.  Worse case would be ‘dry eye’ which is a never ending issue and would mean we’d have to put in drops every day for the rest of his life.

On the upside…the dogs training is going very well.  He has gotten much more comfortable with people coming into the house who he doesn’t know.  In addition, he is also getting so much better at recall and his ‘stays’.  For example…today I took him to the park with the long lead and he was really good at his sit-stays and comes.  And in the roundabout park, he came every time I called, even though he was off lead (nothing going on around him, but hey, it’s still fantastic).  And today as we were a few houses away, I dropped his lead and he still walked by my side all the way home (thanks for the idea Jags).  YAY!  Between what we’re doing and our dog walker/trainer is doing, Barney is learning so much!

Good boy

Today, mummy and I got up early (for a Sunday) and went to the roundabout.  On the way, she kept feeding me yummy kibble when I walked by her side.  Believe me, I was by her side a lot.  And then we went into the roundabout park.  And there, mummy did some training exercises with me.  She started off doing a sit-stay with a very short come.  And I got some kibble.  Then she let me run a bit.  Then all of a sudden, I heard the whistle and she called out “Come” with authority.  I saw she had food in her hand too…so I dashed right to her.  Every time I came to see how mummy was doing, she gave me food.  So I didn’t go too far away.  It was kinda cool as mummy knew that there weren’t many things that would take away my attention and she didn’t try to get me to come when there were other things fighting for my attention.  She’s very smart, my mummy.  I did bark at someone, but when mummy told me to stop, I did.  I even sat down.  Mummy was very proud of me and gave me some more kibble.  We kept going until she ran out of food, which was about half of my breakie.  I had fun and she was pleased.  It was a good morning.

When we go away…

We are very lucky dog owners.  The man who walks our dog, Dima, is also a trainer and is working with Barney as he walks with a bunch of dogs.  And now, we can also count on Dima taking Barney into his home when we go away…for a reasonable price (cause it will include our walks price too…).  Barney will be with a person he knows, will be with a group of other dogs.  It makes both of us much more comfortable about going away.

Liane here.  I have to say that I am a bit sad.  The early autumn tends to be a crazy time for me and so I know I won’t get to spend a lot of those moments with Barney.  Yesterday was one example.  I left home at 7am and didn’t get back until 9:30ish.  Barney was a bit standoffish when I arrived.  I think he’s peeved that I didn’t spend time with him.  And it’s going to happen a lot in the next few weeks.  I’m glad that Roy will get a lot more bonding time with Barney, but I’m sad that the bond we’ve developed over the summer will be stretched and strained due to my job and the things I do (like hockey).  I guess I’m going to just have to spend a lot more time with him at weekends.  I feel like such a bad parent!!!
